The Accutane Lawsuit

Accutane (Isotretinoin) is an oral medication used to treat severe acne. Accutane is often prescribed as a last resort when all other acne medications have failed. After evaluation by a doctor, Accutane can be prescribed for other skin conditions as well.

Accutane was approved by the FDA in the early 1980s and was manufactured by Hoffmann-LaRoche Ltd. Since that time, Accutane was prescribed to millions of people in hopes of controlling moderate to severe acne. In 2009, Hoffmann-LaRoche Ltd. stopped making Accutane due to mounting lawsuits. Although Accutane was removed from the market by the manufacturer, there was no official recall for the product; Generic Accutane continuesm (Isotretinoin) continues to be prescribed and used regularly.

Approximately one thousand Accutane lawsuits are pending in state and federal courts around the country. Many of the lawsuits against the manufacturer of Accutane allege that they failed to warn of potential serious side effects, including birth defects and Crohn’s disease.

Accutane Side Effects

Accutane has been linked to a number of side effects, including:

  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)
  • Birth defects
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions

Crohn’s Disease – a form of inflammatory bowel disease that usually affects the intestines. Although inflammation primarily occurs in the intestines, Crohn’s Disease can effect any part of the digestive tract: from mouth to rectum.

Ulcerative Colitis – another form of inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the large intestine and rectum.

Accutane Lawsuits

When someone is injured by a prescription drug, the appropriate type of claim is a “products liability lawsuit,” which addresses the manufacturer’s failure to warn about certain types of side effects. If you or a loved one took Accutane and suffered side effects, you have the option of seeking legal assistance.

Products liability cases are often complex and require the assistance of a knowledgeable attorney. Ford & Associates Nationwide Legal Services, A.P.C. is committed to bringing together a national network of experienced, aggressive lawyers to help fight for your legal rights.
