Antidepressant Medication Lawsuits

Antidepressants are a type of drug prescribed to control depression, a condition that results from a chemical imbalance in the brain. Antidepressants work to relieve the symptoms of depression by correcting this chemical imbalance. There are several types of antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclics. While generally safe and effective for treating a wide variety of conditions, an increased incidence of complications has led to several antidepressant medication lawsuits.

Antidepressant Side Effects

As with any drug, some people who take antidepressants experience side effects. The side effects of antidepressants include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain

In addition to these side effects, the antidepressant Serzone® has been linked with an increased risk of liver failure, and Paxil® has been linked with severe withdrawal symptoms. Recent studies have also indicated a connection between expectant mothers taking SSRI medications, like Zoloft®, during pregnancy, and an increased risk of birth defects, including autism spectrum disorder.

Possible FDA Recall?

Although the FDA has not issued a recall of any antidepressants in the recent past, it has required the manufacturer of Serzone® to place a black-box warning on the label to alert patients and physicians of the increased risk of liver damage associated with the drug.
